Emily McAteer scored four points on Tuesday in Garnet Valley’s 47-8 win over Conestoga to become the all-time girls’ basketball scoring leader with 1,308 career points. McAteer came into the game needing two points to pass Christy Yarnell, who set the record back in 1995 with 1,305 points.

“It feels great. Looking back during freshman year I never would have thought I made it to this point,” McAteer said. “It will be one the highlights of my four years at Garnet Valley.”

McAteer scored her fourth point two minutes into the game. The game was stopped briefly to recognize the milestone in which McAteer was presented with the ball she scored.

“Emily didn’t want any recognition,” coach Joe Woods said. “She didn’t know we were going to stop the game. She was surprised and a little deterred because it was two minutes into the game and she wanted to play.”

The senior is 169 points away from catching the Austin Laughlin, who graduated last year as the school’s all-time leader with 1,477 points. McAteer, who averages 15 points per game, scored 26 in the team’s opener against St. George’s (Del.).

The fact that she scored four points tonight speaks to her unselfishness.

“Her focus is no issue whatsoever,” Woods said. She plays hard every game and let’s the game come to her.”

The senior will be attending Loyola University of Maryland next season.
