The Pennsylvania Innocence Project hosted its sixth annual Celebration of Justice fund-raiser May 12 at the University of the Arts. More than 350 supporters attended the event, raising $233,000. The Pennsylvania Innocence Project is a nonprofit organization that works to prevent innocent people from conviction and helps exonerate those falsely imprisoned. The evening celebrated the true story of Letitia Smallwood of Carlisle, Pa., released on bail after serving 43 years for a 1972 arson-murder, a case that a Cumberland County judge ruled was based on questionable science. Others receiving recognition were Charles and Barbara Haldeman, winners of the Heroes of Justice Award; defender emeritus Ellen Greenlee, who received the Maureen Rowley Award; and attorney Joshua Snyder, who received the Edward D. Ohlbaum Award.
