Wed. S.J. boys' and girls' roundup: Lupton, Absegami oust EHT

A third-inning walk was the only blemish on righthander Kelly Lupton's gem, as the Absegami senior struck out 15 in her third no-hitter of the season to help the seventh-seeded Braves eliminate No. 10 seed Egg Harbor Township, 6-0, on Wednesday in an NJSIAA South Jersey Group 4 softball opener.

Absegami jumped out to a 3-0 first-inning lead on Dana Cafone's two-run single.

South Jersey Group 3. Audrey Weller, who singled home Alexa Massa in the fifth inning, recorded 14 strikeouts while scattering six hits as third-seeded Moorestown slipped past No. 14 seed Ocean City, 1-0.

Seneca starter Kaila Gerber allowed just four hits, but the 15th-seeded Golden Eagles provided little offensive support in a 4-1 loss at No. 2 seed Central Regional.

South Jersey Group 1. Melissa Mackey batted 3 for 4 and scored three times, and Madison McClintock knocked in a pair of runs to enable third-seeded Gloucester to outlast No. 14 seed Penns Grove, 9-8.

Central Jersey Group 2. Allyson Potts homered and Nicole Shepard wriggled out of a bases-loaded, no-out jam in the seventh inning to preserve 11th-seeded Bordetown's 5-3 upset at No. 6 seed Red Bank.

South Jersey Non-Public A. Erika Hepfl tripled, singled twice and drove in a run for 11th-seeded Holy Cross, which rallied for two runs in the seventh but came up short, 4-2, at No. 7 seed Monsignor Donovan.

Riverside carried a 3-0 lead into the fifth inning, but eighth-seeded Keyport's offense awoke in time to double up the ninth-seeded Rams, 8-4, in a Central Jersey Group 1 opener.

South Jersey Group 4. Jarret DeHart's two-run double helped No. 14 seed Shawnee take an early lead, but third-seeded Toms River South scored in the 12th to snuff out the Renegades' upset bid, 7-6.

Cape-Atlantic. Justin Geri's three-run home run in the first inning began Buena's assault, as the host Chiefs banged out 14 hits in burying Ocean City, 11-2, to clinch the National Conference and Division I titles.

Aaron Cox pitched a complete game and batted 3 for 4 with two RBIs, leading Millville to a 5-2 win at Egg Harbor Township that ensured the Thunderbolts at least a share of their fourth American Conference Division I crown in the last five seasons.

Second-place St. Augustine kept pace with Millville, thanks to a late power surge that made the Hermits 10-7 winners at Hammonton. Joe Gatto (4 for 6, 5 RBIs) hit a two-run home run in the 10th inning, followed by Kevin Baxter's solo shot.

Burlington County. Host Burlington City survived Maple Shade's five-run ninth-inning rally to nip the Wildcats, 8-7, allowing the Blue Devils to remain unbeaten in the Freedom Division.

Colonial. A nine-run third-inning outburst sent host Sterling past Audubon, 12-2, dropping the Green Wave into a tie with Haddon Township atop the Patriot Division.

Pat Burns' two-run double keyed a four-run first inning, and Brendon Anderson took care of the rest, striking out eight and shutting out Woodbury on five hits in Haddon Township's 4-0 home win.

Olympic. Cherokee pulled into a tie with Washington Township atop the American Division, as Jordan Glover and Jake Powell combined for four hits, four RBIs and three runs scored in a 10-4 triumph at Lenape.

Kelsey Solan of Rancocas Valley shot a 3-over-par 75 to finish in a third-place tie in the NJSIAA individual and team championships at Trump National Golf Club in Colts Neck.

Mainland's march to the Cape-Atlantic League title took a detour when visiting Middle Township, behind six goals by Jack Dennis, upset the first-place Mustangs, 14-9.

Tim Purdy made six saves for the Panthers, who ran out to an 8-3 halftime lead in avenging last month's 13-6 home loss.
