Tariq Ingraham dominates down low as Bonner-Prendie advances

Grandmothers can call their grandsons whatever they want.

Who could quibble with a descriptor like "baby?" The answer is: nobody who is smart, so you won't find that here.

Instead, just know that Bonner-Prendergast junior Tariq Ingraham is 6-foot-9 and 240 pounds of Friars forward, but to someone else he's something else entirely.

"That's Mom Mom's baby," yelled Cynthia Turner, clad in green just like the Friars, early in the first quarter Tuesday night at Reading High.

Thanks to Isaiah Wong's offensive prowess and the dominance of Ingraham and Ajiri Johnson down low, the Friars beat William Penn, 93-73, in a PIAA Class 5A second-round game.

On Friday, the Friars will face District 11's Allentown Central Catholic, which beat District 2's Dallas in double-overtime Tuesday night.

For Bonner-Prendie, Wong finished with a team-high 32 points, while Johnson added 26 points, 9 rebounds and 2 blocks.

Ingraham, whose mother, Tynetta Turner-Ingraham, starred at Coatesville and later at Seton Hall, played like a grown man inside, grabbing 17 rebounds and scoring 13 points.

He also punctuated the win with one of the game's most powerful moments.

After a nice, third-quarter feed from Yohance Garner, Ingraham elevated over a defender for a one-handed dunk that sent the Friars bench into a frenzy.

"I've been waiting for a dunk like that," Ingraham said, smiling. "I haven't dunked in a while in a game so that one got us hyped and kept us going."

The ferocious finish put the Friars ahead, 55-37.

By intermission, the Friars (24-4) led, 40-27, and had battered and bruised their way to 10 offensive rebounds. Wong made 20 points look easy at the break, shooting 8 of 13 from the field.

Wong finished 12 of 22 overall, 2 of 3 from the the three-point line and 4 of 6 at the foul line. He also added 7 rebounds, 3 steals and 3 assists.

Johnson had a few fiery finishes of his own.

William Penn, the No. 2 seed from District 3, however, wouldn't go away.

Kyree Generett led all scorers with 35 points, hitting 12 of 23 from the field. Generett's squad got within 77-66 with about four minutes left.

And after a come-from-behind overtime win against Martin Luther King and an 11-point win in the first round, coach Jack Concannon likely wanted to see his team put William Penn away.

Someone else did, too.

"Mom Mom wanted a blowout today!" said Turner, who kept her own scorebook at the game, something she started when her daughter, Tynetta, played at Coatesville.

Later, she added: "Mom Mom can't take this!"

Two freebies by Michael Perretta and a three-pointer by Wong made things comfortable again.

Free throws were about the only area in which Ingraham, who transferred from Salesianum didn't excel.

He finished 7 of 13 at the line, and with nearly each miss, Turner said some variation of "C'mon Tariq!"

The overwhelming majority of his efforts, however, elicited foot-stomps, cheers and jubilation from Turner.

Ingraham didn't hear them, though. His ears usually only pick up one frequency.

"I hear my mom," he said. "I don't hear anybody else, but my mom, because she's the loudest in the family."

In Game 2 of the doubleheader at Reading, District 3's No. 1 seed, Milton Hershey (25-3), came from behind to knock off District 1's No.2 Bishop Shanahan, 69-61, after the Eagles led by as many as nine points in the second quarter.

Donyae Baylor-Carroll and Pedito Rodriguez led Milton Hershey with 25 points apiece. David Angelo led Bishop Shanahan (22-6) with 22.
