Phillies reveal new primary logo

The Phillies are updating their look for the 2019 season.

The Majestic Clubhouse Store’s Twitter account posted a video Friday revealing t-shirts with the team’s new primary logo printed on them.

The logo isn’t a dramatic change from the one the club has had in place since 1992. The “Phillies” wordmark remains intact along with the Liberty Bell behind it, albeit with a greater focus on it. The two major changes are a switch to a darker shade of blue and the removal of the baseball diamond that used to surround the logo.

It’s worth noting that design changes usually come around when a franchise believes it’s at a turning point. The NHL’s Edmonton Oilers are a recent example of this. Two years ago, the team switched from the blue uniforms that were made iconic by the Wayne Gretzky-led Oilers of the 1980s to orange ones after they clinched their first playoff spot since 2006, led by a new star player in Connor McDavid.

“I want to touch and respect the past, but we’re in a new building. We’re in a new era," Oilers' vice chairman Bob Nicholson told the Edmonton journal back in March 2017. "We have a new leader in Connor McDavid. We have a team that is building their identity for today.”

The Phillies look set to do the same. They traded for All-Star shortstop Jean Segura earlier this week and hope to add another star such as Bryce Harper or Manny Machado to their lineup when the winter meetings begin on Sunday. This after the club improved by 14 wins from 2017 to 2018 and the led the NL East for a chunk of the summer last season before stalling out.
