Yiro-Yiro: Greek food and fast, in Roxborough

Philly has enjoyed gyros, souvlaki, spanakopita, and other Greek yummies for decades.

A new generation of Greek American restaurateurs, perhaps weary of the pizzeria business their fathers set up, is getting into the action with fast-casual, dine-in/take-away eateries — basically turning the Chipotle model on its gyro.

The bonus: The masses may finally begin to pronounce gyro correctly — as in, yiro or yeeroh. 

At Broad and South Streets, Yiannys Degermentzidis, son of Pat's Pizza & Pasta owner George Degermentzidis, has Yeeroh (1412 South St., 215-545-8000).

In Roxborough, we now have Yiro-Yiro (6024 Ridge Ave., 267-331-9476).

At Yiro-Yiro, two sets of brothers — Chris and Constantine Avgiris and Teddy and Sav Bouikidis — are rocking a menu led by pork, beef, and chicken roasted on vertical rotisseries and served on a plate or a pita, plus grilled skewers, salads, and sides. (The Boukidis boys are Zesto Pizza. Before the partnership, Chris worked for them.)

Top your gyro with fries, as they do in Greece, and add such toppings as yellow mustard and fresko sauce (a house-mixed combo of ketchup, honey mustard, and mayo).

You must stick around for dessert, which includes a yogurt bar and baklava. Donut miss the diet-busting, fried-to-order loukoumades, which are doughnut holes dredged in honey and then slathered with Nutella.

Hours are 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily.
