A fitness chain backed by former Yankee Alex Rodriguez is set to open its first Philadelphia location as part of an apartment building project planned at the site of a shuttered Northern Liberties beer distributor.

Philadelphia businesswoman Dana Spain said in an interview that Las Vegas-based TruFusion will occupy the ground floor of a six-story apartment building her Spain Property Group is preparing to construct at Germantown Avenue and North American Street.

The $17 million project with 93 apartments will replace an industrial building that had long housed the the Global Beer Distribution beer store. Spain said she hopes to start work at the site in the coming months.

TruFusion specializes in group yoga, weight-lifting, cycling and other workouts in highly heated gyms. The Northern Liberties location is one of seven planned for central Philadelphia by Spain under a development deal with the chain.

Rodriguez became a TruFusion partner and investor in 2017, with development rights for 20 gyms in Florida. The chain currently has locations in Las Vegas; Coral Gables, Fla.; St. Louis, and Scottsdale, Ariz., with more planned in California, Texas and New York, according to its website.

Spain's other projects include the Fairmount at Brewerytown and nearby Annex at Brewerytown apartments.
