Police are looking for a 3- to 4-foot-long alligator on the loose in Atlantic County.

Without elaborating, Mullica Township police said there was a confirmed sighting of an alligator on Hamburg Avenue between the White Horse Pike and Duerer Street, an area bisected by two branches of Landing Creek in the Devonshire section, at about 4:45 p.m. Tuesday.

Police asked residents to report any sightings and to keep an eye on small pets.

Wildlife specialists are assisting the search for the reptile, police said.

Police are also trying to determine where the alligator came from.
