Matt Read clears waivers; Flyers send him to Phantoms

SAN JOSE — As expected, veteran winger Matt Read cleared waivers Tuesday and was sent to the Lehigh Valley Phantoms, the Flyers' AHL farm team.

That means the Flyers will have five rookies on the roster to start a season for the first time since 1992: Nolan Patrick, Taylor Leier, Robert Hagg, Sam Morin, and Travis Sanheim.

The status of defenseman Shayne Gostisbehere should be known after Tuesday's practice.
