Eagles’ overall performance gets a ‘D’ in loss to Titans | Paul Domowitch

The Eagles blew a 17-3 lead to the Titans. They couldn't stop Marcus Mariota through the air or on the ground, and their offensive line did a poor job of protecting Carson Wentz.

The Eagles lost to the Titans, 26-23, in overtime on Sunday.

Paul Domowitch offers up his grades of the offense, defense, and special teams. Read on and tell us what you think.

RUSHING OFFENSE

The Eagles averaged 5.3 yards per carry against the Titans. Jay Ajayi, who is playing with a fractured bone in his back, had 70 yards on 15 carries, including 31 yards in overtime. Wendell Smallwood gave them another solid performance, rushing for 39 yards – many of them after contact — on five carries.

GRADE: B-plus

PASSING OFFENSE

Carson Wentz threw for 348 yards and two touchdowns. But he was under pressure much of the game (sacked four times, hit numerous other times), and struggled in the two areas he excelled in last year: third down and the red zone. He completed just 4-of-11 third-down attempts, and fumbled on a third-and-20 sack early in the fourth quarter that set up a Tennessee score. In the red zone, he completed just three of seven passes. His receivers also dropped at least four passes.

RUN DEFENSE

The Titans came into the game averaging a league-high 32.7 rushing attempts per game. But running backs Derrick Henry and Dion Lewis ran the ball just 12 times Sunday and were held to a collective 24 yards, all by Henry. The man whose running hurt the Eagles was quarterback Marcus Mariota, who had 46 yards on 10 carries, including a 2-yard TD run and a 17-yard run on third-and-19 in overtime that helped keep the Titans' game-winning touchdown drive alive.

PASS DEFENSE

The Titans came into the game ranked 29th in the league in passing. But for the second time in three games, the Eagles secondary got lit up. Mariota threw for 344 yards and two touchdowns, and wide receiver Corey Davis, who was averaging just 11.6 yards per catch in the Titans' first three games, had nine catches for 161 yards and a TD against the Eagles. Their coverage was poor and their tackling was worse. And their pass rush was hit-or-miss, mostly miss.

SPECIAL TEAMS

Punt returner DeAndre Carter had a 41-yard return late in the fourth quarter that helped set up a game-tying Jake Elliott field goal and send the game into overtime. Elliott had three field goals, all five of his kickoffs resulted in touchbacks. P Cam Johnston had a 51.3-yard gross average, but had three touchbacks.

OVERALL PERFORMANCE

The Eagles had a 17-3 lead against a team that was ranked 29th in passing and had scored just four TDs in its first three games and let it come back and beat them. In the second half, the defense looked every bit as bad as it did two weeks ago against the Bucs. And the offensive line needs to get its act together before it puts Carson Wentz back in the hospital.
